Hollidee, een opdracht van de auteur in inkt op het voorste schutblad, luidende: "Aan H. Hollidee/den fynen opmerker, den/ keurigen schryver/ van/ den Auteur/ Hoorn, 31 Maart 1879". H. Hollidee (pseudoniem van E. A. Rovers) publiceerde ETSEN NAAR HET LEVEN. Hij dankt de auteur voor dit exemplaar op 6 mei (zie VW XX p.24) met een vrij lange en dankbare brief. De auteur hield op dinsdag 1 april een voordracht in Hoorn, getiteld Filantropie. Daaraan ging op vrijdag 28 maart een voordracht in Sneek vooraf. Op 31 maart kan hij zich dus zeer wel met Rovers onderhouden hebben, die blijkbaar bij de organisatie van de Hoornse voordracht betrokken was. Opdrachtexemplaren zijn van Multatuli nauwelijks (minder dan 20) bekend. De meeste komen voor in 1878 en 1879, als hij in het land 2 tot 3 voordrachten per week geeft. Maar dan moet er wel iets byzonders aan de hand zijn. Zo dankt hij op 4 maart 1878 Mevrouw Mulock Houwer (Zierikzee) voor de beminnelyke te haren huize genoten gastvryheid, en prijst hier Hollidee als collega schrijver. de Mare 470. [033663] Multatuli. MAX HAVELAAR OF DE KOFFIE-VEILINGEN VAN DE NEDERLANDSCHE HANDELSMAATSCHAPPIJ. Amsterdam: G. L. Funke, 1875. (4), 388 pp. Contemporary brown buckram with brown marbled boards. Douwes Dekker (of whom Multatuli is a pseudonym) wrote Max Havelaar in 1859 in Brussel. It was published by the efforts of Jacob van Lennep in Amsterdam (J. de Ruyter 2 editions in 1860). A 3rd edition of the same text in 1871 by Schadd, Amsterdam. As Van Lennep quite changed the text and DD did not edit the final copy, those editions are quite useless. Stuiveling (Collected Works, 1950) uses the text of this 4th edition, because (see titlepage) it is "de eerste door den auteur herziene uitgaaf". Next edition followed in 1881, DD's popularity then still to come. The manuscript was not returned to DD and stayed with the Van Lennep heirs. In 1910 it was handed over to the Multatuli museum, now part of the library of the University of Amsterdam.  € 2.500,00

Volume 1 has a title and a halftitle not stating an issue number, on p. 5 and 41 followed by a dropped head title of the individual issue. The text thereof is on p. 5 MAX HAVELAAR AAN MULTATULI (which is incorrect, this should be BRIEF AAN DEN GOUVERNEUR-GENERAAL IN RUSTE, the text of the paper agreeing with that under this heading in VW. Evidently a misunderstanding of the publisher, using the title of another publication by Multatuli in 1860). The text of the dropped head title on p. 41 is AAN DE STEMGERECHTIGDEN IN HET KIESDISTRIKT TIEL. VW I p. 544 mentions pink wrappers on the second issue. Could also be, often more colours were used in that time within the same issue. VW I p. 542 (which does not mention the erroneous title as does none of the NCC entries. Is this a quite rare variant copy, or did Stuiveling and the librarians not read accurately?) and 544. de Mare 287 (who quotes as the title of the 1st paper MAX HAVELAAR AAN MULTATULI, without mention of the different content).  € 300,00

Mogelijk zijn deze reeds voor 1880 in een groot aantal met de zwarte decoratie aangemaakt, en werd de band naar behoefte met de titel in goud gecompleteerd. Dit exemplaar is geniet, zoals gebruikelijk bij deze Elsevier bindingen. Klein etiketje (Brinkman, Singel hoek Bergstraat, Amsterdam) op het voorste schutblad, dus in deze gebonden staat door de boekhandel aangeboden.  € 20,00

This copy is very much like De Mare 328, listing a 6th edition (1876, as in this copy) of Minnebrieven "en Verspreide Stukken(in een band). De Mare 454 specifies the edition of VERSPREIDE STUKKEN as the 4th. In our copy however is a 6th edition, dated 1879 on title. Evidently Funke continued to bind MINNEBRIEVEN (1876) with VERSPREIDE STUKKEN after the 4th and even 5th edition were sold out. Note that the 7th edition of MINNEBRIEVEN (De Mare 329) only was published in 1881. Therefore this copy is dated 1879. 174, (6), 159, (1) pp. Original brick cloth blindstamped in black and gilt with bevelled boards. Uncut. Booksellers label (Van Gorcum, Assen, boekhandel aan den Brink. Evidently the predecessor of the later publishing firm) at fpep, so evidently sold in this bound state to the 1st owner. Bookplate (unnamed) at p. 5 (never seen this before). Some minor browning and foxing. An early publishers binding. The black rectangular blindstamped pattern is quite common, also on later Elsevier issues using sheets bought in the 1880 auction. It could be completed before binding with the applicable title in gilt. This copy threadbound (the later Elsevier bindings are stapled. Evidently in 1879 DD became a more bestselling author, Funke being prepared to invest in the binding of an unsold book. (Note that earlier editions come in wrappers or private binding. See also book #33675, Waltman doing the same). In VERSPREIDE STUKKEN all titles lacking in the collection of early editions (1st or used in VW) are included with the exception of NOG EENS VRIJE ARBEID, IDEEEN 2 and ALEID.
