Nietzsche, Friedrich. ALSO SPRACH ZARATHUSTRA. Leipzig: Naumann, 1893. 2. Auflage,
Einzeldruck. Editor Peter Gast. (10), XXXV, [1], 472 pp. with
portrait of N. bound in facing title (with protective tissue in between) and
4-page Brieffaksimile bound in after title. Contemporary
green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. First and last pages browned
as result of substances evidently in boards, progress now stopped however by
loose insertion of buffering acidfree papers. The Auflagenbuch mentions the 3. Auflage as Einzeldrueck and the 2. as
Werke. A later editor reversed this, and also made a note, that the 2nd edition
would be without a Gast preface. Indeed the title of the present edition
mentions on title: ..mit Portait und Brieffacsimile
des Autors. On the title of the 3rd edition "...und ein Vorwort des
Herausgebers" is added. The Vorwort was also sold seperately. As this is a
private binding, the Vorwort can be added by the 1st owner from that source. To be clear: this is a copy with a Gast preface and without a
Werke Titel. An advertisement of Naumann (see Hoffmann p749) states, that this
volume was published in 1892. The Auflagenbuch (in which the Nietzsche-Archiv
recorded all editions) states, that printing of 1000 copies of the 2nd and 1000
of the 3rd was finished on 9/10/1892, so that can very well be the case. It
happened more often, that Naumann printed "on stock" later years on
titles, and that in the end the edition was found in the bookstore before that
year.
