[023576] Nietzsche, Friedrich. MENSCHLICHES, ALZUMENSCHLICHES, Ein Buch Fur Freie Geister, mit einem Vorwort von Peter Gast.. Leipzig: Naumann, 1894. 2nd Edition. (2), XLVIII, (4)Brieffaksimile, 408 and 379, (1), (4) advertisements . Two volumes. Contemporary blue halfcalf with gilt lettering on spine, Those are two of the 4 completed volumes of the first version of the completed works (planned at 9 volumes). The titlepage of the Werke is not bound in this copy, The Auflagenbuch mentions the 3. Auflage as Einzeldrueck and the 2. as Werke. However as this is a private binding, the Werke title can be omitted by the owner, and no final conclusion can be drawn. An advertisement of Naumann (see Hoffmann p749) states, that this volume was published on 15/8/1893. The Auflagenbuch (in which the Nietzsche-Archiv recorded all editions) states, that printing of 1000 copies of the 2nd and 1000 of the 3rd was finished on 9/8/1893. Editor Peter Gast was fired however in October 1893 (Hoffmann p13) after EFN had returned from Paraguay. Shortly thereafter Koegel started the preparation of the second version of the completed works. The new edition (4th and 5th) of Menschliches I was finished on 24/12/1894 (Auflagenbuch). In the Auflagenbuch a note can be found, that "Von obigen beiden Auflagen ging ein grosser Theil zu Weisenfels zum einstampfen." Beiden Auflagen are the 2nd and 3rd. This copy shows that destruction has at least been postponed untill a new edition was available.
