Nietzsche, Friedrich. UNZEITGEMASSE BETRACHTUNGEN. Leipzig: Naumann, 1893. Second edition. Editor Peter Gast. All 4 UB.
Here in one volume, the two volumes of the original edition bound together.
(4), XV, (2), 206, (2) and (6), 205, (3) pp. Contemporary halfleather with
brown marbled boards. Gilt title on spine. Boards and
spine rubbed, heads and tail damaged. Further a solid copy.
The pages I-XV consist of an introduction by Peter
Gast and an unpublished introduction by Nietzsche from 1888, here published for
the first time. Gast does not mention the source, but the text is identical to
the pages 69 thru 75 of Ecce Homo, first in full published in 1908. Evidently
Gast took this fragment from the textcopy, which Nietzsche approved for
printing. It is known, that Gast was in possession of such a copy. The last text thus preceedes the final first publication of Ecce
Homo (Insel Verlag, 1908) by 15 years.
Both volumes with a WERKE title facing the title page
saying: Nietzsche's Werke/ Zweiter Band--I. Abtheilung and
....--II. Abteilung. The same text is used in a
publisher's advertisement of Naumann in August 1894. Most copies do not have a
Werke Titel, and are possibly sold after the Koegel-Werke started to be
published in 1895 to as late as 1901 (see publisher's adverts in Gedichte und
Spruche). Those copies must have left Naumann before 1895; quite rare
therefore.
