The Auflagenbuch states that Naumann acquired the remaining copies of Zarathustra in 1892 from Fritzsch. The date is February 9th. [see Krummel [1998] I, p. 238] To date it was supposed, that Naumann sold those remaining copies in the state they were received from Fritzsch, being second issue. One exception is known, concerning another title, Menschliches I. Copies with an old 1878 Schmeitzner title and a small stamp stating Naumann [ see Schaberg p. 134 and our book 33653] exist.

However recently the following copies of Zarathustra I, II and III were identified:

The text on the title page of I [see illustration] II and III are identical, stating the applicable volume number. As shown in the illustration this text is surrounded by a double-lined rectangle with rounded corners, which is also found on volume 2. On the title of volume 3 the corners have extended endpoint intersections The following sheets of the books are those of the 1893 Gast edition of volume I and II and of the original Schmeitzner first edition of volume III. Not being aware of any scholar having paid particular attention to the words “in Heften” in the Auflagenbuch it only shows upon inspection of volume III, that evidently other second issues were prepared by Naumann, replacing either the original Schmeitzner titles, or using second issue copies as made by Fritzsch. Those let us say second issues B are not mentioned by Schaberg, WNB or KSA.

Naumann likely only can have issued such copies between the date he purchased the remainder copies and October 15th 1892, when the printing of the 2nd edition was completed [see the Auflagenbuch].

A 1893 Naumann advertisement [from Hoffmann p.748] further explains this:

As stated here, new editions were issued only when older inventory was sold out.

Thus possibly only a small number of remaining single Zarathustra copies were purchased from Fritzsch. On the other hand, it seems unlikely, that new titles were printed for less then say 50 copies of each volume.

Such a copy is included in an interesting Sammelband in the former Andler collection.
